A synth, or synthetic, is a classification of artificially created lifeform.
While synths often make use of artificial and mechanical bodies, synths differ from robots in the nature of their mental architecture. The fundamental identity of a synth is its personality core, a neural simulation grown through an unpredictable stochastic process, and highly adaptable to its circumstances and environment.
While the process of creating a personality core is well understood by experts in the field, guiding the growth is unpredictable- more akin to raising a child than to programming software. As such, synths cannot be reliably designed for a given task- instead, a personality core is created, and allowed to explore its individuality, and then synths choose a body based on their identity and preferences.
